About the speaker

Dennis Schilling (谢林德) studied Sinology, Philosophy and Japanese Studies at the University of Würzburg, Wuhan University (China) and the University of Munich. In his doctoral thesis, he systematically examined works from the literary tradition of the ‘Yìjīng imitations (擬易), such as Yáng Xióng’s Tài xuán jīng, Sīmǎ Guāng’s Qián xū and many others, and analysed their ‘imitative’ philosophy, stylistic structure, intellectual foundations and social context. In his habilitation thesis, he examined the causes behind the resurgence of Yogācāra thought in the late Qīng and early Republican periods and analysed the revolutionary ideas of thinkers such as Tán Sìtóng and Zhāng Tàiyán within their political context. After completing his habilitation, he returned to his research on the Yìjīngand published a new German translation of the work in 2009, which offers an in-depth explanation of the political and ideological background of the classical texts and its commentaries. Since 2016, he has been a professor at the School of Philosophy at Renmin University of China. There, he supervises Master’s and PhD students and lectures on Chinese metaphysics, Chinese philosophy of life, comparative philosophy and Daoist philosophy. His current academic focus is on the Philosophy of the Zhuāngzǐ, Views on Life and Death in pre-Chinese and early Buddhist philosophy, and Metaphysical Investigations of Time and Change in Chinese philosophy.

Abstract

Hermeneutics is the art of ἑρμηνεύειν, that is, of proclaiming, translating, explaining and interpreting. Hermes was the name of the messenger of the gods, who conveyed the gods’ messages to mortals. His proclamation is clearly not a mere communication, but an explanation of divine commandments, in such a way that he translates them into the language of mortals and adapts them to human understanding. The task of hermeneutics therefore always consists in transferring meaning from a more distant ‘world’ into one’s own, more familiar world. In this lecture, I shall attempt to examine Chinese philosophy as a ‘philosophy of interpretation’ from various perspectives: Conceptually, the term ‘Chinese philosophy’ is based on a hermeneutic structure: we view Chinese thought from the perspective that it constitutes a ‘philosophy’; and on this premise, we bring Chinese thought into contemporary discussions; In terms of content, the development of philosophical thought in China is closely linked to the interpretation and structuring of earlier ways of thinking; Chinese thinkers developed their views in the context of a literary heritage and a ritual code, which in turn were passed on in the form shaped by these interpretations; Rhetorically, Chinese philosophy engages with specific methods of interpretation and has developed particular forms and methods of hermeneutics that are worthy of close examination; In summary, Chinese philosophy has developed to a large extent on the basis of characteristics conferred upon it by its hermeneutic orientation.
